Every year in the cities and towns of Canada, high school students and college student hopefuls work hard to keep their grades up so that they can earn a student government award. This government sponsored, scholarship and grant program pays out millions every year to deserving students who achieve academic success. This makes it possible for them to attend colleges and universities to pursue degrees in their chosen fields or study. The government does this so that the future generations can provide their service to the communities in which they grew up.

Canada as a country places a great emphasis on providing excellent educational opportunities for young people. The students who earn student government awards have proven that they have solid careers in mind; therefore they can give back to their hometowns once they complete their education. It’s this investment in the future of the economy as a whole that has produced superior results over the years. The same students that are in universities today will be the industry leaders of tomorrow in the Canadian economy.

Students who are pursuing careers in Science, Engineering and Government studies are in high demand by employers, therefore the student government scholarships are generally reserved for these applicants. There are also award opportunities for students interested in the field of Education, those who plan to go on to teach future generations the major subjects like English, Math, Science and Government Studies.

Many of the students who apply for student government awards may have had little opportunity to attend college after their primary studies have been completed. They may be students of low income or expatriate families that have migrated from other countries to live and work in Canada. These normally disadvantaged young people may not be able to pay for the expenses associated with a university degree, such as tuition, rooming or student study materials -which have reached astronomical levels in the last decade.

Student government awards are normally awarded to students in their senior year of high school. These students have demonstrated superior grades, study habits and participate regularly in extracurricular activities in their schools or communities. They generally represent the top 10% of their class. Student government awards can pay for a good portion of the cost of going to university for many first year students. In addition, students may be eligible to renew their awards annually if they keep their grades high and have a good attendance and performance record while in their university studies.

If you are the parent of an exceptional or deserving high school student, be sure to inquire as to the application process for student government awards. The guidance department can generally advise you on how your student can apply and benefit from this program. The awards are given out annually, so it’s important to apply ahead of time to be considered in time for university studies.

by A Nutt

The Net Generation, more officially known as Generation Y, refers to the generation following Generation X. Individuals that pertain to this group were born between 1980 and 1992, and are children of Baby Boomers. The reason Generation Y is also defined as the Net Generation or First Digitals is that members of this cohort came of age during the digital revolution.

Characteristics of the Net Generation Just like any of its preceding generations, this one is influenced by the important events, leaders, developments and trends of its time. Most notably, the proliferation of instant communication technologies (such as email, cell phone text messaging, instant messaging and social networking) has shaped Generation Y’s character as a peer oriented, instant gratification-seeking age group.

In the workplace, this cohort is known as being driven by three core elements. The first one is impact. The net generation cares more than any other generation about making a difference. The second core element that drives this group in the workplace is communication. The new technologies that are ingrained in the lives of these young people have incited a need for constant communication and feedback. Finally, we have flexibility. More and more individuals that are part of Generation Y are shifting toward a home-based work environment in order to further achieve a work-life balance.

The Net Generation and Learning So how does this group respond to a learning environment? What do they expect? Because the attitudes, aptitudes, expectations and learning styles of the Net Generation reflect the overall environment in which they came of age, they have a much different outlook than the faculty and administrators that are educating them. For example, most members of this new generation cannot recall a time when computers did not exist. By contrast, most professors at higher learning institutions learned to do library research through the card catalogue and the Dewey decimal system.

Fortunately, the gap is not impossible to overcome. Contrary to common assumptions, technology is not the most important component of a good educational experience for these young people. In fact, studies have shown that the Net Generation values the experience and dedication of the teacher, as well as his or her passion for the subject above all else.

That’s not to say that technology doesn’t play an important role, it’s quite the contrary. Generation Y students have high expectations for the technology skills and knowledge of their professors. They don’t only expect their teachers to be experts in their fields, committed to teaching and passionate about it, but they also expect that teachers will use technology effectively to communicate that expertise to students. Students want instructors to use technology in the classroom, but only if they can use it appropriately. For example, students agree that Powerpoint is a powerful tool to help instructors communication information, but they express frustration at teachers who overload slides with information.

Also, students in this generation don’t necessarily want a classroom experience dominated by technology, but rather one that is balanced between teacher lectures and interactive participation on public or private schools

With the cost of post secondary education increasing, many students are looking for ways to reduce their own tuition costs. There are plenty of scholarships in Canada that are offered to deserving students. Scholarships give students the ability to attend some of the best colleges and universities that Canada has to offer.

Academic Scholarships are awarded to students who have achieved high academic grades. Each Canadian university offers these types of scholarships. A student usually has to achieve a grade point average of around 90% – 95%. There is usually no application to submit as the individual university or College determines the recipients. The amount awarded will vary from university to university.

Merit Scholarships Merit scholarships are given to students based on a number of criteria such as community involvement, leadership qualities, and innovative skills. Judges receive the applications and determine the recipients. There are academic guidelines that have to be maintained. Each scholarship has its own set of requirements. Volunteer experience is an asset when applying for these scholarships.

Entrance Scholarships: Each University awards their own entrance scholoarships. Requirements include excellent grades as well as merit criteria much like the requirements for a merit scholarship. Most receipients have an academic standing that is in the top 5% of their graduating classes. They are required to submit an application that is seperate from the University.

‘Automatic Consideration’ Scholarships in Canada These type of scholarships are offered as awards and financial aid. Criteria can include outstanding grades, extra-curricular activities, and athletic achievments. There is no application required as there are entrance tests that are taken. The university will determine the scholarship recipient.

Prestigious Scholarships in Canada There are a number of prestigious private and government scholarships awarded to Canadian students and students from other countries. A few of these renowned scholarships include:

- Cameco Corporation – Alexander G. Bell Association for the Deaf – Archives Society of Alberta – Aboriginal Nurses Association of Canada – Black Business & Professional Association

University and College Bursaries There are also a wide range of bursaries offered by private donors, businesses, and organisations. Some bursaries are awarded for a particular area of study and others are for any field of study at a specified Toronto independent high school. Bursaries are usually given to students with financial strains in an effort to help ease the burden. The amount awarded from a bursary will vary.

Bursaries can be offered at the beginning of the academic year or at different times throughout the school year. Examples of bursaries include:

- Association of BC Forest Professionals Bursaries – Elmer Shaw Entrance Bursaries – Anna Sorkomova Memorial Bursaries – Voortman Cookies Bursaries

Where to look for Canadian Scholarships Canadian scholarships can be found at various organisations and clubs such as sporting organizations and community groups, and employers and unions. For instance, if a student’s parents work at a big company or are members of a union, there is probably a scholarship for the employees’ children. Other places where one can get information on scholarships are websites such as scholarshipscanada and studentawards, a school’s guidance counsellor’s office, and a library.

Canada has some of the best colleges and universities in the world. Because of the country’s commitment to higher learning, there are many scholarships and bursaries available to students planning to further their education.
