Financial aid is an important part of applying to college. There are many different types of financial aid that can help a student pay their tuition, or in other words, the cost of attending college.

Financial aid is any monetary help to pay for college tuition. This can be scholarships awarded to a student based on merit, a federal loan from the Government, a student loan from a lending institution such as Citibank, or any type of grant.

There are generally two types of financial aid. The type that you have to pay back, and the type that you do not have to pay back. Because college is expensive and critically important, there are a lot of opportunities to get money that you do not have to pay back for college. Generally these are referred to as scholarships. Athletes often receive what is referred to as a “full ride” which means their tuition is paid for through an athletic scholarship. A “full ride” is also available to academic students through academic scholarships.

It is very difficult to get funding that can cover your entire college funding needs. Often you can combine several scholarships and cover most of your financial requirements through various sources. This is why it is so important to apply for as many scholarships as you think you might qualify for. You can find out which scholarships meet your needs and you might qualify for at by doing some internet research and following the suggestions below.

Here is a checklist to help guide you through the process of receiving academic scholarships to help fund your education:

1. The guidance counselor at your high school can be a big help. If they don’t have time to help you directly you should ask for any scholarship booklets they have put together or that the colleges that recruit from your school have put together.

2. You should take the list of colleges you want to apply to and call each one. You should request the financial aid office and then ask them to send you a scholarship booklet if they have one.

3. Unfortunately the online resources for scholarships are very slim and often are a bit deceiving. Make sure that if the website you are reviewing asks for you information, you know where that information is going. The best sites will send it directly to the organization offering the scholarship. You should use government resources like: students.gov

4. Most applications for scholarships are competitive. You should review the rules and criteria for awards prior to starting the application. Make sure those essays highlight the points that the granting organization is looking for.

5. Keep working at it. Some of the most challenging scholarships to win are often some of the least applied for, so if you think you qualify go ahead and apply. Spend your time wisely on the scholarships that fit who you are.

6. It is important to realize that many people are looking for college funding and specifically scholarships. Most colleges have entire departments dedicated to helping you get information and apply for scholarships. You should utilize the resources available to you.

7. Most scholarship applications are looking for information from people who know you. They often request letters of recommendation. You should get these in order as you complete jobs or are about to leave an internship. When people have you fresh in their minds they will usually be able to write something quickly so you can get all of your applications in on time.

8. Lastly, start early. Do not wait to find and submit applications for scholarships. Not only are scholarship applications time consuming, but it looks very good to be one of the first applicants to submit an application as soon as they are being accepted.
