“That’s why I partly disagree with this vid.NS is impt”
If you had watched the video completely, you would know that it isn’t against NS. The video is trying to expose the gross injustice of the Singaporean society in which multitudes of foreigners are able to enjoy Singapore’s economic success without having to go for NS and protect the country, while locals have to. It also attempts to show that the multitudes of foreigners are reducing the loyalty of Singaporeans to serve their ns with pride

Though I have no idea on how Indonesia comes into the story, however, it is not a reminder to Malaysia & Indonesia that they cannot ‘bully Singapore’ (which I believed that you meant ‘force to submit to Malay dominance’), but rather it is a reminder to Malaysia that Singapore doesn’t need to merge with Malaysia or possess natural resources to succeed. Sg was never a symbol of Malay/Islamic resistance; it is a symbol of an economic miracle along with the other ‘Asian Tigers’.

  3. dakidz Says:

“Constantly intervening in almost every aspect of Sporeans’ lives has created apathy”
That sounded like right-wing politics, where the state interferes with the private lives of the people by enforcing their conservative dogma onto them. That doesn’t create apathy, it activates ardor to change.

  4. dakidz Says:

“FT is good but when they bring in too many it isn’t”
It’s great that you too agree that the high influx of foreign workers is disastrous to the problems of an aging population and the various societal problems. This was what I had said initially, however you seemed to either rejected it or misconceived my stance. If you were to explicitly agree with me from the start, it would have been good for the discussion.

  5. dakidz Says:

Yes, FT is needed to fill up the missing gaps & share their skills and knowledge to Singaporeans, but Sg don’t need FT that amounted to more than a quarter of the entire Singaporean population when it has such an enormous amount of skilled people.
    “Most Malays are Muslims”
    So?
“That is the only way we judge a group – the majority thru our observation. Simple as that.”

  6. dakidz Says:

Right, since I have observed through pornographic videos that majority of Caucasians is well-endowed, that means they are generally well-endowed. Your limited sample of alleged personal observations and alleged anecdotes from your friends cannot be use to represent Singaporeans in general. For all we know, you may lie or exaggerate just so you could prove your point or your friends may lie or exaggerate just so that they can get you to support their notion.

  7. dakidz Says:

Honestly, generalization has led people to judge a person on the basis of the group he belongs to rather than on his own individuality. If you still refuse to accept such simple of form logic, maybe we could both agree that the judgment of a person should only be based on his character rather than on the group he belongs to.

  8. dakidz Says:

“Spore has been arrogant because its leaders (esp LKY) have been making sarcastic jabs at Msia & Indo”
Singapore represents the people of Singapore, not the PAP. If the PAP is being arrogant, it shouldn’t reflect Singaporeans. Likewise, no one should despise Americans because of the bush administration.

  9. dakidz Says:

It is only normal for every country to possess sufficient defenses that are proportionate to the amount & severity of threats a country is facing. Singapore has military ties with Malaysia & Indonesia who are both crucial allies. Malaysia & Singapore are both part of the ‘Five Power Defense Arrangements’ and both countries routinely conduct joint military exercises to promote interaction between both armed forces.

  10. dakidz Says:

“You say partially; I say a large part, if not larger than what the citizens contribute”
What I said are based on academic journals on Singapore’s economic development by economists & associates from NUS.
“But you wouldn’t want to take chances that if Msia and SG were to go to war”
The probability of the apparent military threat of Malaysia to Singapore is equivalent to the threat of Canada to USA, which is almost impossible.

  11. dakidz Says:

Singapore has to make realistic & efficient use of the nation resources and not be burdened by the age old paranoia of an upcoming war with Malaysia or Indonesia on the basis that they are both ‘anti-Chinese’.
“This is where we disagree on. I’m an engineer in the construction industry”
What are you disagreeing to? Please do quote the relevant points that you wish to response to.

  12. dakidz Says:

“When I was in NUS, most of the local students fared okay, but not as outstanding as these scholars”
Any right minded person would want to see the statistics that foreign students perform better in general than local students rather than listening to your claim.
“But look at the standard of English here”
It is a myth that the standard of English in Singapore is poor among the current generation of Singaporeans.

  13. dakidz Says:

If it is poor as you implied it to be, Singapore wouldn’t have been producing students who repeatedly came up tops in international debating & mooting competitions, and we don’t have a problem with our students passing their ‘O’ & ‘A’ levels English. I believe the reason why you thought of it as such and why the government is having ‘Speak Good English’ campaigns is because of the widespread usage of Singlish.

  14. dakidz Says:

It’s not because Singaporeans are unable to speak English eloquently, but it’s a language that they adore to use when chatting among themselves in informal situations. Obviously, the educated Singaporeans would be using the Standard English when communicating in formal situations (especially with their clients) and you would find that they are on par with their English or American counterparts.

  15. dakidz Says:

“And the education system doesn’t promote creativity”
That is the problem faced not only by Singapore, but also in developing countries such as China, India, Malaysia, and Thailand.
“The PAP brings in PRC immigrants to maintain a Chinese majority”
“If the Chinese in SG don’t reproduce enough, soon Malay/Indo Muslims will spill into SG”
Iori55, I am personally disgusted with what you had just said. You had admitted that the PAP is flawed, so why are you supporting this flawed racist policy?

  16. dakidz Says:

Your irrational fear & suspicions of Malay Muslims and insistence on maintaining a Chinese majority in SG attest to your racist & utterly paranoid thoughts and persona that is undoubtedly detrimental to the Malays that you would come into contact with. I wouldn’t be surprised if Iori55 jumps for joy whenever a Malay family died from a plane crash or when a Malay guy is denied of a job that enables him to start a family.

  17. dakidz Says:

Basically, Iori55 & people like him would be happy at any news concerning the decrease in the population of Malay Singaporeans because in his crude perception of reality, it prevents the “Malay/Indo Muslims spill into SG”. Honestly, what the hell does that mean? That if the Malays made up the greater proportion of the Singaporean population, they will exercise racist ideologies against the non-Malays on the incoherent premise that Malays are allegedly racist by nature? That is absurd!

  18. dakidz Says:

“I can’t debate about wage reduction”
Apart from meeting the shortfall in the local labor force, foreign workers help to keep the wages at a lower level due to the increased supply of labor provided by foreign workers.

“I believe the Gov is afraid that schemes for Singaporeans might not work.”

The government simply loves to take the easy way out by not addressing the root cause of the problem.

“it’ll be a long time before most Sporeans gain political consciousness”

  19. dakidz Says:

I wouldn’t count on that. I have the feeling that the oppositions will set aside their differences to form a political coalition in the near future.

“many of the viewers disagreed with them”
Most of the comments I’ve read are critical of the PAP.

“foreigners will be needed is to take up jobs the locals don’t want.”
That is true, but foreign workers are slowly making their way to dominate the skilled sectors.

  20. iori55 Says:

@dakidz I don’t know if the number is sufficient. According to Gov ministers, SG still is below its target population, so that might mean it’s not enough.

One thing for sure, is that one of the reasons foreigners will be needed is to take up jobs the locals don’t want. Most, if not all Sporeans would not want to collect rubbish or sweep the roads. Foreigners will do that, and these odd job workers will likely be a cause of social problems. The five slash-and-hack Msians are a good example.

  21. iori55 Says:

@dakidz Agreed. Citizens are paying the PAP for the wrong reasons. I’d spoken to many of the elderly; they seethe with resentment for the PAP.

But I must say, it’ll be a long time before most Sporeans gain political consciousness. The percentage is increasing, but rather slowly. I’ve watched many opposition videos – great media, but poor viewership. Even more disheartening was that many of the viewers disagreed with them. Seems that many still believe the PAP works wonders.

  22. iori55 Says:

@dakidz I can’t debate about wage reduction because I was never aware of it. Care to shed more light on it?

I believe the Gov is afraid that schemes for Singaporeans might not work. For instance, the Baby Bonus scheme. So the easy way is to take foreigners in. And I wonder how can the Gov create a more independent, enthusiastic society when it spoonfeeds. Many Sporeans admit the people won;t act unless there are benefits or assurance from the Gov. This is one of the Gov’s biggest failures.

  23. iori55 Says:

@dakidz Yes, excess competition is unsavoury. It’s not surprising that many Sporeans are migrating to Aus – education of equal international recognition but more relaxed pace of life, more space, etc. In SG it’s too much competition, too little space. SG, IMO, is run like a company, not a country. The ‘shareholders’ need not be citizens. Our degrees and skills are some form of citizenship – the Gov has treated many foreigners and me much better than many of the locals.

  24. iori55 Says:

@dakidz Then what about Philip Yeo’s remark? Anyway, the ‘lazy local’ phenomenon isn’t just unique to Spore. It’s everywhere in the world. Foreigners who come from abroad come with great dreams and a desire for success. The locals on the other hand will prefer the authorities to take care of them. This is happening in the US too, with white Americans complaining their jobs are taken by immigrants who are willing to work harder, even though for a smaller wage.

  25. iori55 Says:

@dakidz Google this quote: “If native Singaporeans are falling behind because “the spurs are not stuck into the hide,” that is their problem.”

LKY is realistic in his approach of FT, though a little overdone. The PAP brings in PRC immigrants to maintain a Chinese majority. This is cos the populations of Msia and Indo are rapidly increasing. If the Chinese in SG don’t reproduce enough, soon Malay/Indo Muslims will spill into SG, and that’s the end. LKY may be ‘mad’ but he sure is shrewd.
