My daughter is 22 yrs old and has had trouble getting finanical aid because they keep asking for my income. Is there some age that they stop asking that even if your kids live with you? She wants to go back to school but has these roadblocks due to the income guidelines. Is there someplace we can get help filling out the forms for her?

The fafsa website has a list of dependency questions to determine whether a student is independent or dependent. The independent age for financial aid is 24 (23 depending on when her birthday is). Until then, she will have to use your income; however, she will still qualify for financial aid in the form of federal student loans (which are not based on income). A dependent freshman can borrow up to $5,500/year, a sophomore up to $6,500/year, and a junior/senior up to $7,500/year. If she chooses a school less than this amount then she’ll have no problem covering it with her financial aid.

She will need to be over 24.
