Unfortunately, current economic conditions are leading families to believe that college is not affordable.
The reality, however, is that they can. In fact, there is a lot of good news for students and families worried about college costs.
To begin with, both private and public colleges and universities, including those which offer online degree programs, are trying to hold costs down. Some have frozen the cost of tuition and fees, others have limited tuition increases to as low as two or three percent annually. And, in some states, legislators are putting ceilings on the tuition that may be charged charged by public institutions.
In addition, most colleges and universities have stepped up their efforts to raise money for scholarships because they know that families may need more help than in recent years.
Uncle Sam is also stepping up to the plate, with increases in loans and grants. For online college students, there is even more good news; they are now eligible for virtually all federal aid programs.
Louisiana, Florida, Georgia, and many other states also help college students by offering need-based and/or academic achievement scholarships. Some also allow out-of-state students to attend their colleges and universities for in-state tuition and fees (a big saving).
Tuition payment plans also help keep college within the reach of almost all families. One of the most common plans, for example, allows families to pay tuition and fees in eight equal installments. And, there are no interest or other charges for the plan.
With help from college admissions and financial aid counselors, and the many online scholarship search sites, virtually anyone can get the help they need to make college possible. Don’t believe otherwise.
